William came to West New Jersey aboard the Ship “Kent”, Captain Gregory Marlo. William Matlack was the first white man to set foot on what is now Burlington. He built the first two houses in Burlington, and the first corn mill. He lived to be 81. He had six sons and three daughters. William Matlack/Matlock was born in Cropwell Bishop, Nottinghamshire, England. In England the family spelled the name Matlock. After setting in Cherry Hill, William spelled the name Matlack. William was of the Quaker faith.
